In the rush of current publications concerning AIDS, it is difficult to distinguish between new, noteworthy articles and those of lesser significance. There is need for a compilation of up-to-date scientific information in this rapidly growing field. AIDS: Modern Concepts and Therapeutic Challenges fills that need. Edited by Samuel Broder, Associate Director of the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Oncology Program, this clothbound book is a comprehensive collection of articles concerned with all aspects of AIDS. Eminent researchers, including such experts as Max Essex, Chairman of the Department of Cancer Biology at the Harvard School of Public Health, Robert Gallo, Chief of the Laboratory ofTumor Cell Biology at NCI, and Luc Montaigner of the Pasteur Institute, have each contributed articles in their areas of expertise. The volume contains nineteen articles with extensive diagrams, photographs, and tables. Its initial presentations are concerned with introductory information about retroviruses and HTLV molecular biology. Animal models are considered next, followed by epidemiological data. Many of the remaining articles discuss clinical information pertinent to AIDS patients, including psychiatric aspects of AIDS, pathology of AIDS, infectious complications, Kaposi's sarcoma and other dermatological manifestations associated with HTLV/LAV infection, and neurological diseases related to AIDS. The two final articles present recent pharmacologic concerns and strategies for the future. The only complaint one might have about AIDS: Modern Concepts and Therapeutic Challenges is that some of the articles may be too general if one is searching for specific details. This shortcoming is understandable given the constraints on length involved in producing a book such as this; the thorough lists of references accompanying each article help to alleviate that problem. AIDS: Modern Concepts and Therapeutic Challenges is an excellent source for clinicians, researchers, and students interested in any aspect of current AIDS research. These well-written and up-to-date articles by distinguished authors provide a muchneeded reference work.
